The Tamaki Learning Net is a wide area network (WAN) designed to extend broadband and school based learning applications to the estimated 2324 year five and above students when at home. The approach is to use standards based wireless technology to provide blanket coverage across the region, connecting to the school networks and broadband services. The Tamaki Learning Net uses standards based un-licensed 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies, minimising initial capital costs and reducing on-going operational support costs. The implementation of the WAN is staged, beginning with a pilot of three schools, with support for an estimated 500 houses. Following review of the success of the pilot the remaining schools are planned to be deployed over two additional stages.
